Short answer
Angi and HomeAdvisor are one company now: HomeAdvisor is powered by Angi. A HomeAdvisor request goes with your contact information to three or four pros, who contact you, and Angi recommends getting at least three quotes. Either way, you field the calls and compare the pros yourself.
Choose Runhome if you want one point of contact who makes the calls, checks the price and manages the job. Choose Thumbtack or Yelp if you want to compare pros yourself but contact them on your terms. Choose Taskrabbit for quick hourly tasks.
At a glance

The options
Runhome
Best for: One point of contact instead of calls from several pros, and the job managed for you.
- How it works
- You send photos of the problem. Runhome prices the job for your ZIP code, calls vetted contractors, negotiates, and sends you one price to approve. Then it schedules the work and follows up until the job is done.
- What it costs
- The estimate is free. If Runhome handles the job, the one price you approve includes a management fee, usually around 10% on small jobs and up to about $100 on bigger ones.
- Watch out for
- Runhome is built for home repairs and maintenance. For furniture assembly, moving help or cleaning, a task marketplace is the simpler choice.
Thumbtack
Best for: Comparing quotes from several local pros yourself.
- How it works
- You describe the project, contact pros, compare their quotes and hire one. You can contact up to five pros in the first four hours, and other interested pros may message you too.
- What it costs
- Free to find, contact and hire a pro. You pay the pro directly, at the price the pro sets. Pros pay Thumbtack for leads.
- Watch out for
- You do the comparing and the follow-up yourself. A background check shows on a pro’s profile only if the pro completed one. The Thumbtack Guarantee pays up to $2,500 if a job isn’t done as agreed, after you first try to resolve it with the pro.
Yelp
Best for: Sending one request to several local businesses you can judge by their reviews.
- How it works
- Request a Quote sends your project details to a business, and Yelp can send the same request to other relevant businesses. Their quotes and availability arrive in your Yelp messages.
- What it costs
- Free. You pay the business you hire.
- Watch out for
- You judge each business by its reviews and photos; Yelp’s Request a Quote page doesn’t describe background or license checks. Some requests qualify for Yelp Guaranteed, which offers up to $2,500 back if something goes wrong.
Taskrabbit
Best for: Hourly everyday tasks like furniture assembly, TV mounting and moving help.
- How it works
- You pick a Tasker by hourly rate, skills and reviews, book a time, and message them to confirm the details.
- What it costs
- The Tasker’s hourly rate, plus a Taskrabbit service fee and a Trust & Support fee, each a percentage of the task price.
- Watch out for
- Taskers pass an identity and criminal background check, but Taskrabbit doesn’t verify licenses, so you confirm them yourself when a task needs one. The total grows with the hours the task takes.
Common questions
- Is HomeAdvisor the same as Angi?
- Yes. HomeAdvisor is now powered by Angi, and its screening rules point to Angi’s. Handy also connects you with pros through Angi now. So an alternative to one is an alternative to all three.
- Which Angi alternative won’t send my number to several contractors?
- Runhome. You deal only with Runhome, which calls the contractors and books the one that fits, and Runhome doesn’t sell your information. On Thumbtack you contact pros yourself, though other interested pros may message you too. On Yelp, replies arrive in your Yelp messages.
- Are Angi alternatives free?
- Thumbtack and Yelp are free, and you pay the pro you hire. Runhome’s estimate is free, and the one price you approve includes a management fee, usually around 10% on small jobs and up to about $100 on bigger ones. Taskrabbit adds a service fee and a Trust & Support fee to the Tasker’s hourly rate.
- Can I keep using a pro I found on Angi?
- Yes. If you already have a quote from a pro you found on Angi or HomeAdvisor, upload it to Runhome and Runhome will tell you whether the price and scope look fair for your area.
