Short answer
Thumbtack is a marketplace: you contact local pros, compare their quotes and hire one. The alternatives differ mostly in who does that work. Angi and Yelp work much like Thumbtack, with reviews and quote requests, and Angi adds pre-priced bookings. Taskrabbit fits hourly everyday tasks better than repairs.
Choose Runhome if you don’t want to message and compare pros at all. Runhome prices the job, calls vetted contractors, negotiates, and sends you one price to approve.

The options
Runhome
Best for: Skipping the messaging and comparing: one price, and the job managed for you.
- How it works
- You send photos of the problem. Runhome prices the job for your ZIP code, calls vetted contractors, negotiates, and sends you one price to approve. Then it schedules the work and follows up until the job is done.
- What it costs
- The estimate is free. If Runhome handles the job, the one price you approve includes a management fee, usually around 10% on small jobs and up to about $100 on bigger ones.
- Watch out for
- Runhome is built for home repairs and maintenance. For furniture assembly, moving help or cleaning, a task marketplace is the simpler choice.
Angi
Best for: Booking a small pre-priced service, or reading reviews before you choose a pro.
- How it works
- A directory and marketplace of more than 200,000 home pros. You request quotes or book a pre-priced service, and then you work with the pro yourself. HomeAdvisor and Handy now connect you with pros through Angi too.
- What it costs
- Free to search, request quotes and book. Pros pay to advertise on Angi. Paid Angi Key memberships offer up to 20% off pre-priced projects.
- Watch out for
- Angi recommends getting at least three quotes, so expect to talk with several pros. The Happiness Guarantee covers projects booked and paid through Angi; other projects are between you and the pro.
Yelp
Best for: Sending one request to several local businesses you can judge by their reviews.
- How it works
- Request a Quote sends your project details to a business, and Yelp can send the same request to other relevant businesses. Their quotes and availability arrive in your Yelp messages.
- What it costs
- Free. You pay the business you hire.
- Watch out for
- You judge each business by its reviews and photos; Yelp’s Request a Quote page doesn’t describe background or license checks. Some requests qualify for Yelp Guaranteed, which offers up to $2,500 back if something goes wrong.
Taskrabbit
Best for: Hourly everyday tasks like furniture assembly, TV mounting and moving help.
- How it works
- You pick a Tasker by hourly rate, skills and reviews, book a time, and message them to confirm the details.
- What it costs
- The Tasker’s hourly rate, plus a Taskrabbit service fee and a Trust & Support fee, each a percentage of the task price.
- Watch out for
- Taskers pass an identity and criminal background check, but Taskrabbit doesn’t verify licenses, so you confirm them yourself when a task needs one. The total grows with the hours the task takes.
Common questions
- What is the best alternative to Thumbtack?
- If you like comparing pros yourself, Angi and Yelp work the same way, with reviews and quote requests. If you want the repair handled for you instead, Runhome prices the job, calls vetted contractors and schedules the work. For quick hourly tasks like assembly or mounting, Taskrabbit is the closer fit.
- Is there a Thumbtack alternative where pros don’t contact me?
- Yes. With Runhome you deal only with Runhome: it contacts the contractors, compares their pricing and books the one that fits, and it doesn’t sell your information. On Yelp, pros reply in your Yelp messages. HomeAdvisor works the other way round: it sends your request and contact information to three or four pros, who contact you.
- Is Angi or Thumbtack better?
- Both are free marketplaces where you compare pros yourself. Angi adds pre-priced services you can book at an upfront price, and its Happiness Guarantee covers projects booked and paid through Angi. The Thumbtack Guarantee pays up to $2,500 if a job isn’t done as agreed and up to $100,000 for property damage a pro causes.
- Are Thumbtack alternatives free?
- Angi, Yelp and Thumbtack are free to use, and you pay the pro you hire. Runhome’s estimate is free, and the one price you approve includes a management fee, usually around 10% on small jobs and up to about $100 on bigger ones. Taskrabbit adds its fees to the Tasker’s hourly rate.
