Roof leaks in one spot and stains the ceiling below
A leak that shows in one spot on the ceiling is almost always a repair, and the rest of the roof stays. Most single-spot leaks start at a penetration: a chimney, a vent pipe, a skylight, or the line where the roof meets a wall. Flashing at those points fails years before the shingles do. You need a whole roof only when shingles are curled, bald or missing across full slopes, or when the same spot has been patched twice and still leaks.
