Short answer
Gutters that pour water over the front edge during heavy rain are usually blocked at the downspout, not worn out. Run a garden hose into the gutter above one downspout and watch the bottom of the downspout. If water runs out fast, that gutter drains fine and the overflow comes from too much roof water or a run that sags. If water backs up and sits over the downspout opening, the downspout or the underground drain below it is plugged, and clearing that line stops the overflow.
Tell a blocked downspout from a gutter that is too small
- Wait until the rain stops and the gutter has drained.
- Run a garden hose into the gutter a few feet above one downspout.
- Watch the bottom of that downspout. A full, fast flow means the downspout is clear.
- If the water rises and sits over the downspout opening, the downspout is blocked.
- Follow the downspout to the ground. Where it enters an underground drain, feed the hose in and listen for water backing up.
- Stand back and sight along the gutter run. Water should travel toward the downspout with no flat or reverse sections.
- Hire for anything that needs a ladder or work at the roof edge.
If the downspout and the buried drain both flow freely, the gutter or the drain is too small for the roof and water sheets over the lip in heavy rain. If water backs up at the downspout or the underground drain, clear that line and the overflow stops.
Repair or replace
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Downspout blocked with leaves, grit or shingle granules | Clear the downspout. Repair. |
| Underground drain below the downspout clogged or crushed | Clear it, or replace the buried line. Repair. |
| Gutter holds water because it sags or tilts away from the downspout | Reset the hangers and pitch the run toward the outlet. Repair. |
| Gutter full of debris along its length | Clean the gutter and every downspout. Repair. |
| Gutter pulling away from the fascia, or the fascia is rotting | Re-fasten the gutter and repair the fascia. Repair. |
| Level, clean gutters that still overflow only in heavy rain | Add a downspout or fit larger gutters. Replace. |
Can I do it myself?
You can clear a downspout from the ground. Feed a hose up from the bottom outlet and flush until the water runs clear, or push a drain auger down from the top of the downspout and pull the debris back. You can also flush a short underground drain with a hose. Hire for anything that needs a ladder, work at the roof edge, or digging up a buried drain line, because a fall from gutter height is the real risk on this job.
What a contractor will ask you
Have these ready and you skip the back-and-forth.
- Which gutter run and which downspout overflow, and whether water pours over the front lip, leaks at a joint, or the gutter pulls away from the house.
- Whether the overflow happens right at the downspouts, along a straight run, or at a corner.
- Whether the downspouts drain freely when you run a hose into the gutter above them, or whether water backs up and sits.
- Whether the downspouts empty above ground or run straight into an underground drain.
- The age of the gutters, and whether they are open K-style or covered with leaf guards or screens.
- Whether the gutter looks level between hangers, or sags or tilts anywhere.
- A wide photo of the roof edge, the gutter, and the downspout connection.
Common questions
- Why does my gutter overflow only during heavy rain?
A gutter that handles normal rain and pours over the lip in a downpour is getting more water than it can carry. That usually means one downspout is draining too much roof, or a partly blocked downspout cannot keep up at peak flow. Clear the downspout first, then add a second outlet if it still overflows.
- Water pours over the front lip of my gutter like a waterfall. What causes that?
Water sheeting over the front lip is a flow problem at the outlet, not a hole in the gutter. The downspout or the underground drain below it is restricted, so the water backs up and spills over the nearest edge. Clear that line and the waterfall stops.
- My gutters are level and clean but they still overflow. Why?
Level and clean does not mean the water can leave fast enough. A downspout that empties into an underground drain can be blocked below ground where you cannot see it. Flush the buried line and confirm the downspout empties freely before you replace anything.
- The downspout runs into an underground drain. Could that drain be the problem?
Yes. Underground drain lines collect grit and roots, and old sections crush, so the gutter backs up even when the downspout itself looks clear. A drain service can camera and clear the buried line, and that costs less than new gutters.
- Do I need bigger gutters or another downspout?
Only when the downspouts and the buried drains are clear and the water still pours over the lip. A long roof with the water landing at or near a single downspout needs another outlet or a wider trough. Price that upgrade after a clear-flow test.
